The island Kos
Kos is located in the southeast Aegean Sea, south of Kalimnos and north of Nisiros, in the ancient Keramikos Gulf also known as Kos Gulf, and it is only 3 nautical miles from the shores of Asia Minor. It is the third large island of Dodecanese after Rhodes and Karpathos, it covers an area of 290,29 kilometers while the circumnavigation of the island is estimated at 60 nautical miles. Since prehistoric times it was an important station in the sea network that started from the Black Sea, and along the coastline of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands reached North Africa.
Kos is the most lush and fertile island of Dodecanese with mild climate while is the second tourist destination after Rhodes. Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine who was born on the island around 460 BC and founded the famous medical school of Kos. The island has a lot to offer to the visitor such as the mountainous villages, the perfect tourist facilities, the lush environment, and the wonderful beaches create the ideal environment for memorable holidays. The town as well as the capital of Kos is located in the northeast side of the island with large roads, and lush scenery with palm trees along the roads. |
